Like people, dogs appreciate their own space, and the kennel you choose should keep your pet comfortable and safe. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a kennel for your pet:
Size:

* Size of your dog: The larger your dog is, the more space you will want to give him to move around. If you are buying a kennel for a puppy, be sure to consider how large he will be when fully grown. Your dog should have enough space to move around freely, and have plenty of room to eat and sleep. Similarly, if you are purchasing the kennel for more than one dog, each will need to have enough space to move about independently and play comfortably.

* Energy level and personality: Obviously the more energetic your pooch is, the more space he or she will need to move around and play. If you are purchasing a kennel for your high-energy Jack Russell terrier, a higher kennel (e.g. 6 feet high) may be a better idea than a lower one (e.g. 4 feet high).

* Yard space: Possibly the most important size consideration, you’ll need to consider the amount of available space you have in your yard. Purchasing the proper sized kennel will help ensure you, your family, and your pet get the most enjoyment out of your yard.

Materials:

* Wire gauge: The smaller the wire gauge, the thicker the wire. If you have an especially aggressive dog, consider a lower wire gauge (and therefore thicker) mesh kennel. Most kennels are made either of chain link mesh (diamond shaped mesh), or welded wire (rectangular or square mesh). Both chain link and welded wire kennels are easy to upkeep, and never require staining or painting.

* Finish: Galvanized and/or powder-coated finishes are excellent choices for a kennel. Galvanizing is a process by which the steel mesh is immersed in molten zinc to prevent rust. Powder-coating is the process of coating a surface with powdered paint which is baked onto the surface. Powder coated surfaces are abrasive resistant and extremely durable.

Safety:

* Security: A kennel is not only a great idea to keep your dog safe, but it can also keep the people in your life safe. You’ll want to be sure your kennel cannot be opened by others, particularly children, without your knowledge. So a safety latch and the ability to lock the kennel are imperative.

* Protection from the elements: It is always a good idea to provide your pet with a covered area to keep out of the elements. During warm weather, covers provide a shady escape from the sun and harmful ultra-violet rays. And, when the weather is not so nice, a cover will keep your pet dry and protected from snow.

* Safety from other animals: If you are concerned about keeping other animals, such as raccoons, out of the kennel, a cover is an important consideration.

Other considerations:

* Portability: Portable kennels offer the flexibility of being able to move the kennel, if you decide to place it in a different location in your yard. They also allow you to dismantle it and take it along if you move.

* Ease of assembly: The last thing you want to do when your package arrives is spend your whole weekend putting it together! Consider a kennel with a quick-connecting frame – not only will it be a ‘snap’ to put together, but you will also be able to take it apart when and if you need to.

* Ease of cleaning: Kennels with extended base legs elevate the kennel walls slightly off the ground for easy cleaning. This function also prevents bacteria build-up in hard-to-reach undersides of the frame.

* Attractiveness: There is no reason your kennel can’t look great too. A well-designed kennel will not only be a great second-home for your dog, but can enhance the look of your yard.
